Futura Group have recently donated £500 to a local Netball Club to enable a total revamp of the kit and club name.
The ‘what was’ Oldbury Netball Club has players from all over the Black Country and Futura’s very own Amy Deakin has been a loyal member for over 3 years, but their kit was outdated and in need of being brought into the modern day era of netball. Mark Abel, CEO, commented; “As part of our corporate social responsibility and promoting the values of the business we endeavour to support our employees and encourage them to get involved in exercise and healthy living. The benefits of being active are numerous, and the hard work and dedication Amy has shown to her netball team is a source of inspiration for all of us in the business. We have looked at ways to support local sporting teams through our charity ‘The Futura Foundation’, which has recently surpassed a total of £50,000 raised for causes such as the Birmingham Children’s Hospital, MacMillan Nurses and Marie Curie. Supporting a local grassroots netball team seemed a perfect fit for us, we’ve even looked at setting up an internal charity game to raise money, but I’m not sure the new kit will stretch that far!” Established in 1994 as Wednesbury Netball Club (named due to the training location), the Club has since been going strong as Oldbury Netball club for over 10 years. Whilst the club and its members still have some connections with Oldbury, they are taking this opportunity to have a fresh start, and renaming the club (name still to be decided). Amy Deakin, Group Business Manager commented; “It’s definitely time for a change for the club and it’s a great opportunity to get netball some better coverage with Futura’s help! I’m really excited to see the new kit that Futura have generously donated towards, and get back onto the court!” Captain, Chairman and club Coach Nicky Atkins said, “We've currently got players from the ages of 21 to 50, but have had ages as young as 14! It's a proper Black Country based team with family members and multiple generations in the team; proper local talent through and through! We’re a real grass roots team, and have developed so many players up over the years, with players getting through to England trials and playing at national levels, with 2 England caps, and many players developed up and onwards into regional teams, and are always keen to keep attracting new players that we can develop. With Futura’s support, we can walk on court with an extra edge and help give netball a better perception than the pleated skirt days are gone – netball is alive and modern! We’re really grateful for the support Futura have given us, and their help with our kit design.” Oldbury NC are currently playing in Division 2 in the Winter Walsall Midweek League and Division 1 in the Weekend League, with have high hopes for the rest of the season (regardless of the single digit temperatures they will have to endure for matches).
